Australia has approximately 210 freshwater fish species,
190 of which are native. Salmon, trout, cichlids, and carp
have been introduced by man. (To compare, Africa has some
1900 native species). The low number reflects the scarcity
of Australian inland aquatic habitats.
Only about a dozen native species are
harvested or cultured regularly. These include:
Freshwater eels (Anguilla australis, A.reinhardti)
Barramundi (Lates calcifer)
Murray Cod (Maccullochella peeli)
Yellowbelly or Golden Perch (Macquaria ambigua)
Macquarie Perch
Silver Perch or Bidyan
Sooty Grunter
Freshwater Catfish or Dewfish
Sleepy Cod
Spotted Barramundi
Northern Spptted Barramundi or Gulf Saratoga
