CARING FOR INJURED OR ORPHANED NATIVE BIRDS

The aim in taking care of any native wild bird must always be to release the bird back into the wild, if possible. A special licence is required if you wish to keep native birds for any purpose.

Most veterinarians in practice will examine and give emergency treatment to native birds, and a number of organisations such as WIRES and NANA consist of dedicated animal and bird carers who are prepared to take on the after care of sick and injured birds.

If you find a sick or injured wild bird the bird should be placed in a darkened softly padded box (eg a large cardboard box with airholes punched in it and containing some old clean towels). Take the bird to a veterinarian or to an experienced bird carer as soon as possible. If it is not possible to get help immediately, cover the box with a towel or blanket and place it in a quiet warm place and disturb it as litle as possible.

Stressed birds need REST, QUIET, WARMTH, DARKNESS, and MINIMAL HANDLING.
